Everton in transfer tussle to sign Martin Braithwaite, make contact

Everton and a few other Premier League clubs have reportedly contacted the representatives of Espanyol striker Martin Braithwaite.

According to a report by Danish outlet Tips Bladet, Martin Braithwaite is the subject of interest from Everton. The Toffees have been scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window. The 33-year-old is also a target for other Premier League clubs like Leicester City and Southampton, with all three outfits contacting the Espanyol striker’s entourage.

The Martin Braithwaite story

Martin Braithwaite has found a stable footing in his career since leaving Barcelona and joining Espanyol in September 2022. The Dane’s spell with Barcelona was bizarre as the Blaugrana damaged CD Leganes’s prospects for survival in the 2018/19 season by completing an emergency move in February 2020.

The 33-year-old was a reliable backup option for Barcelona in his 30-month stay at the Catalan club. Braithwaite reluctantly joined Espanyol on Deadline Day in the 2022 summer transfer window, with the experienced striker enjoying an exceptional 2023/24 campaign with the Catalan outfit.

The Danish attacker amassed 22 goals and three assists in 45 outings across all competitions, taking Espanyol back to La Liga. Meanwhile, the former Barcelona striker’s exploits at the Catalan club have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of a few Premier League clubs, including Everton.

England return on the horizon for Braithwaite?

Everton’s interest in Martin Braithwaite is surprising yet understandable. While the Toffees have been scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window, Sean Dyche has three centre-forwards in his squad. However, Dominic Calvert-Lewin faces an uncertain future at Goodison Park amid his links with Newcastle United.

Several strikers have thus emerged on Everton’s radar, with Iliman Ndiaye closing in on joining the Merseyside club. So, it is difficult to see where Braithwaite will fit into the scheme of things unless he plays on the flanks. Nevertheless, the Toffees have established contacts with his representatives over a possible move in the summer transfer window.

Apart from Everton, Leicester City and Southampton have also contacted Martin Braithwaite’s representatives. So, it will be interesting to see if the 33-year-old former Barcelona striker returns to England after his previous stint with Middlesbrough.
