Chelsea are reportedly looking to sign Nico Williams from La Liga club Athletic Club in the summer transfer window.
According to Spanish publication SPORT, Chelsea are ready to offer Nico Williams lucrative wages worth €15-20 million per year to tempt him to move to Stamford Bridge. The Spanish international currently pockets €7.8 million-a-year wages.
Williams is reportedly a target for Spanish giants Barcelona as well. He enjoyed an impressive 2023/24 season with Athletic Club, managing to score eight goals in all competitions. He picked up 19 assists along the way as well.
It is no surprise that clubs like Chelsea are keen on securing his signature. The 21-year-old has been quite impressive for Spain in the European Championships as well. He will be hoping to help his country to international glory this summer.
Chelsea willing to pay a premium for Nico Williams
Chelsea are ready to break the bank for him, and they are ready to double his wages to get the deal done. The player could earn around €15-20 million per season at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, he has a €60 million release clause in his contract, and the Blues would have no problems paying up.
Williams has been linked with other English clubs as well, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up. He needs to join a club capable of winning major trophies, and Chelsea could certainly provide him with that platform.
The West Londoners are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and they have the resources and a formidable squad to compete for trophies every season. They have looked quite toothless in the attack in recent seasons, and the Blues will have to improve in that department if they want to win major trophies.
Signing a quality attacker should be top priority for them. Williams is versatile enough to operate on both flanks and he will add goals, flair and pace to the side. Along with him, Chelsea should invest in a quality goalscorer as well.
If Chelsea can transform their attacking unit this summer, there is no reason why they cannot bounce back strongly and push for major trophies next season. Barcelona want to sign the player as well, but it is highly unlikely that they will be able to compete with Chelsea financially. However, he has his heart set on moving to the Catalan club this summer.
