Liverpool, Manchester City vying for Alex McCarthy

Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing 34-year-old English goalkeeper Alex McCarthy from newly promoted Premier League club Southampton.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on HITC, Liverpool and Manchester City have set their sights on Alex McCarthy. The two Premier League heavyweights are scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the summer transfer window. However, Southampton will look to keep hold of the 34-year-old heading into the 2024/25 season.

Alex McCarthy and his journey at Southampton

Alex McCarthy has been a solid performer since joining Southampton from Crystal Palace in August 2016. A native of Guildford, the Englishman graduated from the youth division at Reading FC. However, he struggled to find a stable footing until he moved to the St. Mary’s Stadium.

The 34-year-old has faced a constant battle for the first-choice goalkeeping berth, which was the case in the 2023/24 season. The 34-year-old goalkeeper managed only 810 minutes of game time across nine appearances in all competitions, with only five outings coming in the EFL Championship.

The English shot-stopper faces an uncertain future at St. Mary’s after Southampton’s promotion to the Premier League. While the Saints want to keep the veteran goalkeeper at the club, a move to a bigger team might be on the cards, with Liverpool and Manchester City vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.

Move to a bigger Premier League club on the cards?

Liverpool’s interest in Alex McCarthy is intriguing. While Alisson Becker faces an uncertain future at Anfield amid his links with Saudi Pro League clubs, Adrian’s impending move to Real Betis might force the Merseyside outfit to pursue a goalkeeper. The Southampton veteran has thus emerged as a viable target for Liverpool.

As for Manchester City, it is unclear why the Premier League champions want to secure Alex McCarthy’s services in the summer transfer window. While Ederson Moraes faces an uncertain future at the Etihad, Manchester City should replace him with a world-class goalkeeper instead of McCarthy.

While Liverpool and Manchester City reportedly want to sign McCarthy from Southampton, it is unclear if he wants to move to a bigger Premier League club. Meanwhile, Southampton will aim to keep the 34-year-old Englishman at St. Mary’s beyond the summer transfer window.
