Bayer Leverkusen will not sell Jeremie Frimpong for discounted price

Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen will not sell Jeremie Frimpong for less than his release clause of €40 million amid his links with Barcelona.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Jeremie Frimpong is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Dutch wing-back has a release clause of €40 million in his contract with Bayer Leverkusen. However, the Bundesliga champions will not accept a discounted transfer fee for the productive defender.

Jeremie Frimpong and his Bayer Leverkusen story so far

Jeremie Frimpong has established himself as one of the best players in the Bundesliga since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Celtic in January 2021. A productive wing-back, the Dutchman has been a game-changer for Die Werkself in the last three and a half years.

The 23-year-old was exceptional in the 2023/24 season, contributing to 26 goals in 47 appearances across all competitions. Frimpong found the back of the net 14 times while providing 12 assists, with his output helping Bayer Leverkusen almost go the entire campaign without losing a game while winning the Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal.

The Dutch wing-back’s performances earned him a spot in the Netherlands’ squad for UEFA Euro 2024. In addition, Jeremie Frimpong’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. The Bayer Leverkusen star’s next destination might be La Liga, with Barcelona vying for his signature.

Barcelona interested in Frimpong

Barcelona’s interest in Jeremie Frimpong is understandable, with Hansi Flick driving the club’s move for him. The Catalan giants are in a spot of bother over the possibility of signing Joao Cancelo in the summer transfer window, with Manchester City not ready to offer a discount on the asking price for the Portuguese international.

Bayer Leverkusen will also adopt that stance, with Frimpong having a release clause worth €40 million in his contract. And the Bundesliga champions will not accept a discounted price to sell the 23-year-old Dutchman in the summer transfer window. That poses a problem for Barcelona.

With the Blaugrana in a spot of bother on the financial front, signing the €40 million-rated wing-back might be a tall order. It will be interesting to see if Barcelona can muster the funds to secure his services in the summer transfer window.
