Hansi Flick has reportedly requested Barcelona to sign Jeremie Frimpong from reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
According to Oriol Domenech on Catalunya Radio, Jeremie Frimpong is the subject of interest from Barcelona. Hansi Flick is driving the Catalan outfit’s potential move for the Dutch wing-back, and he wants the club to prioritise signing him from reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window.
The rise and rise of Jeremie Frimpong
Jeremie Frimpong has been one of the best players in the Bundesliga since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Celtic in January 2021. A former trainee at Manchester City, the Amsterdam native spent most of his formative years away from his homeland, graduating from the Elite Development Squad at Manchester City.
However, the 23-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with Celtic, spending 18 months with the Scottish giants. Frimpong’s stock has skyrocketed in the last three and a half years, and he played a leading role in Die Werkself winning the Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal in the 2023/24 season while losing only one game throughout the campaign.
Frimpong contributed to 26 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions, finding the back of the net 14 times while providing 12 assists. The Dutchman’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, including many Premier League bigwigs. However, Barcelona might be his next destination if Hansi Flick gets his way.
Will Barcelona sign Frimpong?
Barcelona can do with a player like Jeremie Frimpong amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Joao Cancelo. The Portuguese international has returned to Manchester City after a successful loan spell with Barcelona. However, an extended stay at the Catalan club is not set in stone.
Manchester City will not budge from the price tag of £25 million they have set to sell Cancelo in the summer transfer window. That is an issue for Barcelona, considering the club’s financial woes. Meanwhile, Hansi Flick wants the Blaugrana to prioritise a summer move for Frimpong.
That might be an issue for Barcelona, considering Frimpong will cost more than Cancelo. However, the 23-year-old Bundesliga winner will be a long-term solution for the Catalan outfit compared to Cancelo. So, it will be interesting to see if the Dutch wing-back arrives in Catalonia in the coming weeks.
