Galatasaray eyeing Mateo Kovacic swoop

European regulars Galatasaray will reportedly look to sign 30-year-old Croatian international Mateo Kovacic from Manchester City this summer.

According to a report by Turkish outlet Fotomac, Mateo Kovacic is the subject of interest from Galatasaray. The reigning Turkish Super Lig holders are keen on signing a midfielder in the summer transfer window. And they have set their sights on the 30-year-old Manchester City midfielder, lining up talks with the Premier League champions.

Mateo Kovacic has been a dependable backup option for Pep Guardiola since joining Manchester City from Chelsea in the 2023 summer transfer window. The Croatian international was not an undisputed first-choice starter but grew in stature in the second half of the 2023/24 season.

Despite not being an automatic first-choice starter for Manchester City, the experienced midfielder turned out 46 times across all competitions, amassing 2,713 minutes of game time while chipping in with three goals and one assist. However, Kovacic faces an uncertain future at the Etihad heading into the summer transfer window.

Manchester City might delve into the market for a midfielder in the summer transfer window. While Kalvin Phillips and Matheus Nunes are the first two midfielders on the chopping block, Kovacic’s future is not set in stone either. Such a situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of Galatasaray.

Galatasaray’s interest in Mateo Kovacic is understandable. The reigning Turkish Super Lig champions are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. The Tanguy Ndombele loan experiment did not work, and Okan Buruk wants a new partner for Lucas Torreira in the middle of the park.

Kovacic has thus emerged as a viable target for Galatasaray, with the European regulars ready to approach Manchester City for talks over the 30-year-old midfielder. The Turkish champions are accelerating the move for the Croat. However, the experienced midfielder does not want to leave Manchester City anytime soon.

Mateo Kovacic’s stance is understandable, considering he grew in stature in the second half of the 2023/24 season. So, Galatasaray must look elsewhere for midfield reinforcement, with Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay also a target.
