Atletico Madrid front-runners to sign Mason Greenwood

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly emerging as the leaders in the race to sign Manchester United prospect Mason Greenwood.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on HITC, Mason Greenwood is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish giants are keen on signing a versatile attacker in the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the futures of Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata. And they are one of the favourites to sign the Manchester United prospect.

Mason Greenwood and his controversial career so far

Mason Greenwood established himself as one of the best young players in the world during his days in the youth division at Manchester United. The Englishman did not take long to become a regular for the first team, becoming a pivotal figure under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, a major controversy off the field threatened to derail Greenwood’s fledgling career as he spent some time in jail. While the case is in the past, the 22-year-old has no future at Manchester United. In addition, the youngster’s career with the English national side has ended, although he could continue his international career with Jamaica.

Meanwhile, Greenwood has enjoyed an exceptional 2023/24 campaign with Getafe, contributing to 16 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions. He found the back of the net ten times while providing six assists. The youngster also won Getafe’s Player of the Year award, although his Manchester United career is over. A return to La Liga might be on the cards with Atletico Madrid.

Another spell in La Liga beckons?

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Mason Greenwood is understandable. The Colchoneros are scouring the market for a versatile attacker heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the futures of Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata. So, it behoves Atletico Madrid to invest in a young, top-class forward.

Greenwood has thus emerged as a viable target for Atletico Madrid, although Getafe will also aim to keep hold of him. However, the report by Graeme Bailey on HITC has claimed that the Colchoneros are emerging as the front-runners to sign the 22-year-old from Manchester United.

Manchester United will demand a premium to part ways with Greenwood in the summer transfer window. That might put a spanner in the works for Atletico Madrid, although it will be interesting to see if his career extends in La Liga by joining Los Rojiblancos.
