Manchester United veteran defender Jonny Evans is yet to make a decision on his future with his contract running out.
According to Simon Stone via Give Me Sport, Jonny Evans is yet to decide whether he would like to stay at Manchester United for another year. The Northern Irish international could retire from the game or he could even look for a different challenge away from the club.
Jonny Evans’s return to Manchester United
Evans came up the ranks at Manchester United, and he was an important part of their first team back in the day. He parted ways with them back in 2015 before making a return ahead of the 2023/24 season.
The veteran defender was brought in as an additional cover for the backline. But he ended up playing an important role because of the injury crisis at the back in Erik ten Hag’s team. The 36-year-old racked up over 1,500 minutes of first-team action across his 30 appearances.
With his contract at Old Trafford running out in a month’s time, there has been no update regarding an extension. And, Stone believes that Evans is yet to decide on his future and he could look to extend his stay at the Manchester-based or could even end up calling it a day.
Stone’s take on Evans’s future
The BBC reporter said, “Evans is still to decide whether to continue with his boyhood club, extend his career elsewhere or retire.”
The 36-year-old is still not clear on whether he would like to stay at United for another season after playing an important role at the club. Next season, he might not get similar game time at Old Trafford with multiple defensive reinforcements expected to arrive in the summer.
As a result, Evans has a decision to make, whether to continue, leave for a new challenge elsewhere or retire from the game. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if Manchester United want the experienced campaigner to be around for another season given the role he could play if they encounter another injury crisis. The coming weeks will play a big role in determining which way the Northern Irishman’s career is heading.
