Aston Villa eyeing up a move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

Aston Villa are reportedly eyeing a move for Conor Gallagher, with the 24-year-old seemingly heading towards the exit doors at Chelsea.

According to Fichajes, Aston Villa are keen on signing Conor Gallagher in the summer as an exit from Stamford Bridge looms large for the 24-year-old Chelsea star. Unai Emery wants to strengthen his squad ahead of next season heading into the UEFA Champions League, and the Birmingham-based club are now ready to sound out a move.

Conor Gallagher to Aston Villa?

Aston Villa are in a dream position under Unai Emery, who has done one better on his UEFA Europa Conference League qualification from last season by finishing in the top four. The final finish ensured the club would play in Europe’s top-tier competition, and now the manager wants quality players to help strengthen the squad.

Emery certainly has another midfielder on his agenda, and now there are links to Conor Gallagher. The 24-year-old Chelsea star might leave Stamford Bridge in the summer as he enters the final year of his existing deal with the West London side.

Aston Villa’s ability to provide him with Champions League football may be the trump card in convincing Gallagher, who has reportedly rejected the idea of joining Newcastle United when the Magpies expressed their interest. Chelsea are still mulling over his future and will surely sell him should they not renew his stay here, as a new contract has yet to be forthcoming.

Tottenham have been in the lead so far, although they might have taken a backseat after failing to qualify for the Champions League, which has probably given Aston Villa the impetus to make a move. The project under Emery also seems very interesting, as the Basque boss would surely look to sign many other players and will hope Gallagher is part of that equation.

Will Chelsea sell Gallagher?

Conor Gallagher is a homegrown talent, and his sale will bring in full profit for the club, which has come close to breaching PSR rules. However, some recent reports have shown Chelsea have sold some of their properties to balance their financial books, which may see them keep some of their stars previously considered for sale.

There have been links to Manuel Ugarte as a replacement for Gallagher, as a new contract has yet to be discussed so far with the midfielder. The 24-year-old Chelsea star has been immense for the club this season, with his hand in at least 16 goals through his own strikes and assists, as the Blues are now pencilled in to finish in the Europa League places. As for his future, Chelsea are still considering all options as a decision might come soon.
