Chelsea eyeing Raphael Varane swoop

Chelsea are ready to enter the race for Raphael Varane to replace Thiago Silva as the Frenchman will leave Manchester United on a free.

According to Fichajes, outgoing Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has emerged as a target for Chelsea in the summer. The Blues are keen to maintain some balance in their backline by adding an experienced replacement for Thiago Silva, and the 31-year-old Frenchman is set to be available on a free transfer.

Chelsea in Raphael Varane tussle

Chelsea are planning big things for the summer window, as they probably anticipate a return to Europe when the current season finishes. The Blues are eager to bring some more talented young players in the upcoming window, although they are also angling moves for some experienced stars to balance their squad a bit.

Thiago Silva will be leaving Chelsea when the season ends, and there is a significant need to find an experienced replacement for the veteran Brazilian defender. They have earmarked 31-year-old Manchester United star Raphael Varane as a potential target, especially given how easily he could be acquired in the market.

Varane will leave Manchester United as a free agent after the club did not take up the option to extend his deal. The Red Devils might have lost out on the potential to recoup some of the money invested but will save on his massive wages, something Chelsea might have to consider if they are angling for a move for the Frenchman.

Varane is a tremendous option to improve Chelsea’s defence and close the significant gap that Silva will leave behind. The Blues may not be able to offer the 31-year-old Manchester United star Champions League football. But they can show him a young project where he can be one of the experienced leaders.

Al-Nassr and Juventus also chasing Varane

Chelsea could certainly offer Varane the opportunity to continue in the Premier League when his Manchester United contract comes to an end. However, there is also the chance for the Frenchman to experience another league and probably ensure he has another big-money move left in him.

Al-Nassr have been interested and could potentially offer him a lucrative contract that could see the Frenchman reunite with former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. Juventus are also keen but may not be able to offer him the kind of money Chelsea or Al-Nassr might, which makes the English and Saudi side the best bet to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer.
