Barcelona will reportedly look to re-sign 21-year-old Dutch playmaker Xavi Simons on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
According to an exclusive report from Football Espana, Xavi Simons is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are keen on re-signing the 21-year-old playmaker in the summer transfer window. However, they will look to secure his services on a season-long loan deal, with Paris Saint-Germain open to such an arrangement.
Xavi Simons and his recent resurgence
Xavi Simons has exploded onto the scene in the last two seasons. A native of Amsterdam, the Dutchman spent most of his formative years in Spain, rising in prominence during his spell in Barcelona’s fabled La Masia division. However, he finished his youth career at Paris Saint-Germain after leaving Barcelona to seek regular first-team game time.
The regular minutes did not come at PSG, and Simons joined PSV Eindhoven in a Bosman move in July 2022. The 21-year-old enjoyed an exceptional 2022/23 campaign with PSV, scoring and assisting goals for fun. Meanwhile, the youngster’s exploits for the Dutch outfit did not go unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs before PSG re-signed him last summer.
However, PSG immediately loaned him out to RB Leipzig, and the player has been excellent thus far this term, contributing to 24 goals in 42 appearances, finding the back of the net nine times while providing 15 assists. Meanwhile, the Dutch playmaker’s progress has alerted several well-known outfits again, with Barcelona reportedly keen on re-signing him in the summer transfer window.
Barcelona dream return on the cards?
Barcelona’s interest in Xavi Simons is understandable. The Blaugrana will delve into the market for a creative midfielder in the summer transfer window. Ilkay Gundogan is on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the final phase of his glittering career. In addition, Frenkie de Jong continued to face an uncertain future at the Catalan club.
So, several candidates, including Bernardo Silva, have emerged on Barcelona’s radar. However, Simons is also an option worth considering. Meanwhile, the Dutch playmaker is keen on rejoining Barcelona in the summer transfer window. And a loan move might be on the cards.
PSG will only entertain offers to loan out the 21-year-old, with the operation suiting Barcelona. However, recent reports have claimed that RB Leipzig will look to extend Simons’s stay at the Red Bull Arena. So, it will be interesting to see if the Dutchman returns to Barcelona this summer.
