Thiago Silva set to sign two-year contract with Fluminense

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva will leave the West London club as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

Thiago Silva will be out of contract in the summer transfer widnow, and he has chosen to return to his former club Fluminense. The Chelsea defensive mainstay has already agreed a two-year contract with the Brazilian outfit, as per Caught Offside.

Silva has been a very useful player for Chelsea since joining them on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. He has been one of the main leaders in the dressing room, and it will be interesting to see if Chelsea can replace him adequately once he leaves as a free agent.

Apart from his qualities as a central defender, his experience, leadership and winning mentality were invaluable additions to the Chelsea dressing room. Even though the Brazilian defender is past his peak, he could still prove to be a very useful acquisition for Fluminense.

He has the ability to do well in his homeland at this stage of his career, and it remains to be seen whether he can help them with trophies. Silva has won 31 major trophies throughout his career, and his presence in the dressing room could prove to be priceless.

Thiago Silva has been a key player for Chelsea

The Brazilian defender helped Chelsea win the UEFA Champions League trophy during his time at the club, and replacing him will not be an easy task. He managed to win the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup with the Blues as well. Chelsea have had a disappointing season so far, and they will lead to improve multiple areas of their squad.

It will be interesting to see if they can sign a quality central defender as well. The Blues have looked quite vulnerable defensively this season, and they need to tighten up at the back if they want to bounce back strongly and secure Champions League qualification next season.

Chelsea spent substantial amounts of money on new signings last summer. But they have not been able to get the best out of their squad. They are set to miss out on Champions League qualification once again, and they will end the season without a trophy. It will be interesting to see if they can replace key players like Silva adequately in the coming weeks, and get back to their best next season.
