Liverpool hope to sign Mats Wieffer for €40 million

Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer, a target for Barcelona, in the summer transfer window.

According to a report from Fichajes, Liverpool are hoping to sign Mats Wieffer for a fee of around €40 million. The Feyenoord midfielder is also a target for Barcelona heading into the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old Dutchman has done quite well for Feyenoord, and he has been a key player for Arne Slot. The Dutch manager is expected to take over at Liverpool next season. So, it is no surprise that the Reds are looking at his former players.

It is no secret that Liverpool need to bring in a quality defensive midfielder, and Wieffer could prove to be a superb acquisition. He will help shield the back four and break up opposition attacks. Liverpool have been linked with a number of defensive midfielders in recent months. They tried to sign players like Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia last summer.

The Reds ended up signing Wataru Endo from Stuttgart, and the Japanese international has done quite well. However, Endo is in his thirties, and Liverpool need to plan for the future. Signing a quality defensive midfielder should be one of their priorities heading into the summer transfer window, bringing Wieffer into the picture.

Liverpool need a defensive midfielder this summer

Signing the Feyenoord player could prove to be a wise decision. The Dutchman is well settled under Slot, and he should be able to fit in at Liverpool easily and make an immediate impact. However, the midfielder has been linked with Spanish giants Barcelona as well.

He has the physical and technical attributes to thrive in English football and he is well-versed with Slot’s style of play. The opportunity to join one of the biggest clubs in the world will be a tempting proposition for the Dutch midfielder, and it remains to be seen whether the two clubs can agree on a fee.

€40 million would be a substantial amount of money for the midfielder, and Feyenoord could be tempted if Liverpool calling with an official proposal. A move to the Premier League will be an exciting step up for the midfielder and he will look to prove himself in England.

He has already shown his quality in the Eredivisie, and it remains to be seen whether he can make his mark at Liverpool if the transfer goes through. However, with Barcelona lurking in the background, a move might be on the cards.
