Liverpool considering Mats Wieffer summer swoop

Liverpool will reportedly compete with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United for 24-year-old Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer.

According to a report by HITC, Mats Wieffer is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. However, they will face stiff competition from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United for the 24-year-old Feyenoord midfielder.

The rise and rise of Mats Wieffer

Mats Wieffer has been one of the best midfielders in his country in the last two years. A native of Borne, the Dutchman graduated from the FC Twente youth division. However, he established a foothold in senior-level football at Excelsior Rotterdam before rising in prominence following the move across Rotterdam to Feyenoord in July 2022.

The 24-year-old did not take much time to stamp his authority at Feyenoord, becoming a pivotal figure as the club won the Eredivisie title last season. While the reigning Dutch champions will yield the top prize to PSV Eindhoven this term, Wieffer remains a superb performer, chipping in with six goals and four assists in 42 appearances across all competitions thus far.

Wieffer’s progress at Feyenoord has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. The Dutch midfielder is also a target for several Premier League bigwigs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Newcastle United.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Liverpool will likely appoint Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement this summer. While the debates over his suitability rage on, the Reds have identified a few Feyenoord players as targets. Mats Wieffer is also an option worth considering due to his ability to reprise different roles in the middle of the park. As for Manchester United, they might view the 24-year-old as a long-term replacement for Casemiro.

Meanwhile, Tottenham will likely part ways with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso in the summer transfer window. And Wieffer is a viable target for the North London club. As for Newcastle United, they can boost their midfield unit by landing the Dutchman this summer.

With the competition for Mats Wieffer’s signature being high, a move to the Premier League might be on the cards. It will be interesting to see where the 24-year-old Dutch midfielder lands if he leaves Feyenoord in the coming months.
