Liverpool, Manchester City were prepared to make a move for Florian Wirtz

Liverpool and Manchester City were ready to make a move for Real Madrid and Barcelona target Florian Wirtz in the summer.

According to a report by TBR Football, Florian Wirtz has decided to continue at Bayer Leverkusen and his decision has come as a big blow for Liverpool and Manchester City. Both English giants were ready to make a move for him in the summer but their interest in his services will have to wait.

Florian Wirtz’s incredible return

Wirtz has been in exceptional form this season. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has featured in 44 matches for Leverkusen and he has contributed towards 36 goals (17 goals, 19 assists). His performances have helped Xabi Alonso’s team dominate throughout the season.

They have already won the Bundesliga and are on course for two more titles. The German sensation has managed to get back to his best since returning from an ACL injury and he now finds himself on the wishlist of multiple top clubs from across Europe.

Liverpool & Manchester City suffer a blow in their pursuit

Liverpool and Manchester City are two clubs keen on signing the 20-year-old. They believe Wirtz has the potential to be one of the world’s best and they want him in their squad. The Reds feel he could be their next big star while City see him as an ideal long-term replacement for Kevin De Bruyne.

Both English clubs have been tracking the German sensation since he made his debut for Leverkusen back in 2020 and they were ready to table an offer for his services in the upcoming transfer window. But, his representatives have confirmed that he will continue at Leverkusen for at least another season.

City and Liverpool have been informed about his decisions and it has come as a blow as they will now have to wait for the opportunity to push for his signature. But, they have asked to be kept informed about his situation.

While it is a blow for the English clubs, it’s a boost for Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. Both clubs are well aware of his potential and would love to have him in their squad. They have other transfer priorities for the upcoming window and his decision to stay until the summer of 2025, allows both clubs to compete for his signatures next summer.
