Newcastle United are reportedly increasingly likely to offer Kieran Trippier a new contract after fending off interest from Bayern Munich in January.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United will soon open talks with 46-cap England international Kieran Trippier over a new deal, with the Magpies preparing the contract for their veteran right-back.

Trippier has proven to be a superb recruit for Newcastle United since arriving from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 for £12 million. The former Tottenham man was the Magpies’ first transfer following their Saudi Arabian-backed takeover in late 2021, and since then he has regularly captained Eddie Howe’s side in the absence of club captain Jamal Lascelles.

He helped the club secure a return to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years with a top-four Premier League finish last season. It was a staggering accomplishment, and one that the Toon players would love to repeat. However, whether or not that will happen remains to be seen.

The Magpies are currently sixth in the Premier League, having thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 on Saturday afternoon. That was an important three points, and it leaves Eddie Howe’s side ten points behind Tottenham Hotspur in fifth with six games to go.

Trippier still a vital component at Newcastle United

Give or take a handful or so of below par performances, around December time, largely down to fatigue, the versatile full-back has been absolutely immense for the Toon in the playmaking department, chipping in with Premier League-leading ten assists.

The England international was the subject of a rejected bid from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the January transfer window. However, the Tyneside club had no intention of selling the 33-year-old, who sets the standards of the squad on and off the pitch, and rejected the proposal first-hand.

Although the Magpies could be forced to sanction a big-name player’s departure this summer to stay clear of the FFP and PSR financial parameters, Newcastle United want to keep the vital leaders of the dressing room, having recently tied midfield workhorse Joelinton down to a new long-term deal.

Howe has previously called Trippier “the heartbeat” and “transformative” man on his team. So, extending his contract beyond the end of the next season is worth it in so many aspects. Howe has had to deal with a litany of injuries to his squad this season, particularly at the back. Trippier has not featured since the win over Wolves at the beginning of March.

A calf injury has kept him out of action since then, and he is expected to miss a couple more weeks. With a crucial, season-defining home straight around the corner, the Magpies are hoping to welcome back their stand-in skipper sooner rather than later.
