Unai Emery’s Aston Villa could decide against making a move for the services of the 21-year-old Chelsea target Nico Williams.
According to a report by Football Insider, Aston Villa could drop their interest in the services of Nico Williams. Despite being long-term admirers of the 21-year-old Athletic Club sensation, Unai Emery’s team might not make a move for his services in the upcoming transfer window.
Williams has made quite a name for himself since getting promoted to the Athletic Club’s first team in the summer of 2021. He was considered a huge prospect coming up the ranks, and the 21-year-old has not disappointed. He has already established himself as a mainstay in the team, and his consistent performances have earned him a place in the Spanish national team as well.
In the ongoing season, Williams has featured in 30 matches and has contributed towards 20 goals. He has found the back of the net on six occasions and has 14 assists to his name. His performances have resulted in a lot of interest, and the 21-year-old is expected to be on the move in the upcoming window.
While he did pen down a contract extension towards the end of last year, the new deal was Athletic Club’s way of securing their investment. There is a release clause worth €50 million in a deal that will most likely be triggered by an interested club in the summer.
Aston Villa unlikely to push for Nico Williams
Aston Villa are one of the clubs that have been monitoring Williams for years now. They are long-term admirers of the Spanish international, and their manager Unai Emery is a big fan. He would love to have him in his ranks but they might still not push for his services.
Villa signed Morgan Rogers in the winter from Middlesbrough, which means they do not really need a new winger in the summer. Moreover, they do not have the best financial situation and are at risk of breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
As a result, they will be cautious. While qualifying for the UEFA Champions League could help them financially, moving for a winger won’t be a priority in the upcoming window. Meanwhile, Chelsea could be the club that ends up signing the 21-year-old.
The Blues have been linked with him for a while now, and they do need attacking reinforcement. Chelsea have the financial strength and as per reports, the West London club have already started pushing to ensure they can beat the competition to his signatures.
