Arsenal and Liverpool recently scouted 23-year-old Sunderland shot-stopper Anthony Patterson ahead of a potential transfer.
According to a report by HITC, Arsenal and Liverpool could both make moves to sign a new goalkeeper in the upcoming transfer window, and they have their eyes on Anthony Patterson. The English giants have scouted him in the recent past and are quite impressed with what they have seen.
Anthony Patterson’s time at Sunderland
Patterson has been a part of Sunderland since his childhood days. He came up the ranks at the club and got promoted to their first team back in the summer of 2021. The 23-year-old has gone from strength to strength over the years. He has managed to establish himself as one of the mainstays and already has 120 appearances for the first team.
He is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship, and his consistent performances have attracted a lot of interest. The English shot-stopper, who has 12 clean sheets in the ongoing edition, has been on the radar of Arsenal and Liverpool since the winter transfer window. And they remain interested in him.
Arsenal, Liverpool scouting Anthony Patterson
Scouts from both Premier League giants were present in the Stadium of Light to watch the 23-year-old in action at the weekend. They watched Patterson keep a clean sheet as his team played out a goalless draw against Bristol City in the English second tier.
Both clubs are on the lookout for someone who can be their number two in goal starting next season, and the homegrown Sunderland star is a name that is quite high on their wishlist. Aaron Ramsdale is expected to part ways with the Gunners in the upcoming transfer window after being replaced as Arsenal’s number one by David Raya.
Mikel Arteta’s team are ready to sign Raya permanently, which means Ramsdale will look for a new club. Meanwhile, Caoimhin Kelleher is also looking to be a number one but is aware of the fact that is unlikely to happen at Liverpool. Alisson’s contract runs until the summer of 2027, the Reds have no intentions of replacing him anytime soon.
With Ramsdale and Kelleher expected to leave, both Arsenal and Liverpool need a new shot-stopper, and they feel Patterson could be a great addition to their ranks. The 23-year-old will provide cover in the short term and could eventually have a bigger role at the clubs.
