Sevilla are reportedly keeping tabs on Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Alonso Rivero, La Liga mainstays Sevilla are interested in securing the services of Chelsea prospect David Datro Fofana in the upcoming summer transfer window.

David Datro Fofana and his Chelsea stint so far

The 21-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge from Molde last year and was sent out to loan to Union Berlin after six months with the first-team squad. His arrival at the German club coincided with their form falling off the roof, and the youngster was also directly impacted.

The season-long loan deal was eventually cut short, and Fofana returned to Chelsea in January 2024. The youngster was then sent out on another loan, this time to Premier League side Burnley.

Vincent Kompany’s side are struggling to stay afloat in the English top flight, but Fofana has risen to the challenge and has been a standout performer for the men in Claret. The Ivory Coast international has four goals and an assist in nine games for the club and is going from strength to strength. He has now emerged as a target for Sevilla.

La Liga Beckons?

Sevilla are on the lookout for a new striker in the summer and were close to securing a loan move for Fofana last January. In fact, had it not been for FIFA regulations, the 21-year-old is likely to have moved to Andalusia rather than Burnley.

The La Liga mainstays retain a strong interest in Fofana and could yet make a move for him this coming summer. Given Chelsea’s need for an infallible goalscorer themselves, there is little reason for the Blues to sanction a permanent exit.

As things stand, Youssef En-Nesyri’s contract at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan expires in 2025, meaning Sevilla could cash in on him this upcoming summer window. Should that happen, Fofana has a bright chance of going into the 2024/25 campaign as the club’s ace striker.

This is good news for Chelsea as regular playtime will certainly help aid Fofana’s development. He is not yet ready to take on the mantle of being Chelsea’s leading man, and it is better if the Blues avoid making the same mistake they did with Armando Broja and thrust too much responsibility on the youngster too soon.

Having Fofana go out on loan for another season will help him fine-tune his abilities and return to Chelsea a far more lethal and confident player. At 21, he still has the best years of his career ahead of him, and a move to Sevilla on loan will aid the Blues should they choose to see the big picture.
