Real Madrid have reportedly put their plans to sign Chelsea right-back Reece James on hold until 2025.

According to Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has made it clear that he is not looking to sign Chelsea captain Reece James or any other rumoured right-back option until 2025 after handing utility man Lucas Vasquez a new deal.

It’s an open secret that Kylian Mbappe will join Real Madrid this summer. His free agent move from PSG has not been confirmed by the player or either club. However, practically all media outlets, including the BBC, have claimed that an agreement has already been reached.

Mbappe is arguably the world’s best player at present and represents a coup of epic proportions for Real Madrid. However, the good news for boss Carlo Ancelotti does not end there, as Brazilian wonderkid Endrick is also expected to come.

Elsewhere, the full-back positions are up for debate, with reports that Los Blancos have agreed personal terms with Alphonso Davies, who will be in the final year of his contract at the Allianz Arena come summer.

Furthermore, there have been rumours that the Merengues also want to land a new right-back, and Chelsea’s Reece James and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold are two options on their radar.

Right-back is an area that Ancelotti & Co. will need to address in the coming years. Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez are both 32 years old, and there is currently no long-term successor at the club. As such, one will surely be signed, and it could be James—but it won’t be this summer at least.

Real Madrid put Reece James pursuit on hold until 2025

Following news that Vazquez is set to sign a new one-year contract next week, the above report states that Real Madrid do not intend to sign a new right-back in the summer, instead opting to continue with Carvajal and Vazquez for another 12 months.

James has had a torrid time with hamstring injuries over the last three seasons, which has really hampered his development. He has been sidelined since December after limping off in the 2-0 away defeat at Everton.

The England international then had surgery on his hamstring later in the month to try and put his long-term injury problems behind him.

The 24-year-old has remarkably missed 56 of Chelsea’s last 89 games in all competitions because of injury problems, so it will be interesting to see whether Real Madrid do try to sign him in 2025 if he’s unable to overcome the nagging injury issues.
