Arsenal and Chelsea have received a major boost in their pursuit of the services of 25-year-old Sporting CP ace Viktor Gyokeres.

According to Correio da Manhã via Sport Witness, Arsenal and Chelsea are both looking to sign Viktor Gyokeres ahead of next season. The 25-year-old Swedish striker has been on fire in the ongoing season, and he is on the wishlist of quite a few top clubs from across Europe.

Gyokeres made a name for himself at Coventry City before joining Sporting CP last summer. The Portuguese club forked out €21 million to land the striker at the club. Since joining them he has been in sensational form.

In his 39 appearances for Sporting, he has contributed towards 50 goals. The Swedish international has scored 36 goals and has 14 assists to his name. His incredible numbers have resulted in a lot of attention, and there could be a bidding war for him in the summer.

Gyokeres’s contract with the Portuguese outfit runs until the summer of 2028, and he is protected by a nine-figure release clause. Despite that, there is a high chance of him making a move to a European giant when the ongoing season ends.

Viktor Gyokeres keen on a return to England

While there is interest in him from all over Europe, following his time at Coventry City, the 25-year-old has a desire to return to England. He wants to feature in the Premier League, and that is what gives Arsenal and Chelsea a boost in their pursuit.

Both clubs are in desperate need of a new number nine. The Blues struggled to score goals at the start of the season. While they have managed to address those issues thanks to contributions from different players, they still need a proven goalscorer, and Viktor Gyokeres is quite high on their wishlist.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta’s team have been doing wonders under his guidance. Scoring goals has not been a problem for them, but their boss is not happy with the output of his strikers. He feels signing a top striker will help them take the next step and be at the level of the best clubs in the world. As a result, they are keen on having Gyokeres in their ranks.

While Chelsea and Arsenal are both keen, it will be interesting to see how much Sporting CP will look for as the player has years left on his deal and is protected by a massive release clause.
