Chelsea are reportedly keen on Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, who they view as the top alternative to Victor Osimhen.
Lautaro Martinez has been in talks to sign a contract extension at Inter Milan, but a report from HITC has claimed that Chelsea are hoping to swoop for the World Cup-winning striker in the summer transfer window. The Argentine international will cost at least £80 million.
It is no secret that Chelsea need a reliable goalscorer and the Argentine international could transform them in the final third. They have also been linked with other players, with Victor Osimhen being a top target.
Chelsea finished in the mid-table positions last season, and it is unlikely to be any different this year. They desperately need top-quality players who can improve them. Martinez has been a reliable goal scorer in Serie A, and he has 26 goals from some competitions this season. He could prove to be a tremendous addition to the Chelsea attack and become a major upgrade on Nicolas Jackson.
Martinez could fancy Premier League move
Lautaro Martinez won the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina, and he might feel that this is the right time for him to compete at a high level and try out a different challenge. He has shown his quality in Italy consistently. Chelsea could provide him with the platform to showcase his qualities in England now. The striker is reportedly valued at £80 million.
It will be interesting to see if Chelsea are prepared to pay up. It is certainly a lot more reasonable asking price compared to that of Victor Osimhen. The Napoli striker is a target for Chelsea as well but he is likely to cost around £150 million.
Chelsea have therefore decided to move for the Argentine international if they fail to secure Osimhen’s services in the summer transfer window. It remains to be seen whether all parties can secure an agreement quickly.
Martinez certainly has the physical and technical attributes to do well in the Premier League, and he could add a new dimension to the Chelsea attack. The 26-year-old is more than just a goalscorer, and he will add creativity to the side as well.
Even though Chelsea have not been at their best, they have the resources to sign the best players and they are one of the biggest clubs in the world. They could be an attractive destination for the South American striker at the end of the season.
