Chelsea are keen on having 21-year-old Tottenham Hotspur target Nico Williams in their ranks ahead of next season on priority basis.
According to a report by HITC, Chelsea want to reinforce their attack ahead of next season. Signing a new winger in the summer is a priority for the Blues, and they have their eyes on Athletic Club’s 21-year-old sensation Nico Williams.
Williams has been a part of the Spanish club since his childhood days. He came up the ranks at some pace and made it to their first team in the summer of 2021. The Spaniard has gone from strength to strength over the years, and his impressive performances have helped him break into the national team.
In the ongoing season, the 21-year-old has featured in a total of 27 matches and has contributed towards 17 goals. He has found the back of the net on six occasions and has 11 assists to his name.
The new deal and the release clause
His impressive rise and consistent performances in the recent past have caught the eyes of quite a few top clubs from across Europe. While he did pen down an extension back in December, and his new deal runs until the summer of 2027, there is a real possibility of him leaving at the end of the season.
The new deal has a tempting release clause of £43 million that could lead to his departure. While there are performance-related triggers that could increase the clause, it will still be a bargain price for someone who has been a consistent performer and has huge potential.
Chelsea & Tottenham to battle for Nico Williams
Chelsea are one of the clubs keen on having him in their ranks. The Blues want a new winger in the summer. Despite having Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke and Mykhaylo Mudryk in their ranks, Mauricio Pochettino wants more competition for the trio.
The Argentine tactician feels Nico Williams could be a great signing for them in the long run, and his release clause makes him an affordable option for the Blues. They have made him their priority and will push for him in the summer. But, Chelsea are not only club interest, as Tottenham Hotspur are willing to battle it out for his signatures.
Spurs have had a great start under Ange Postecoglou, and they are ready to back him in the next transfer window. The North London club have been closely monitoring the 21-year-old for a while now, and they could make a move for him in the summer. His arrival will add depth to the flanks and allow Postecoglou to field Son Heung-min in a more central role when needed.
