Newcastle United enter Lloyd Kelly chase

Eddie Howe will focus on bringing in a central defender as a cover or competition for Sven Botman on the left-hand side. Ideally, he would want someone who can also play left-back sometimes, and Lloyd Kelly fits that bill rather perfectly.

The 25-year-old has already rejected several proposals from Bournemouth to renew his contract, which points towards him leaving on a free transfer. There is fantastic value for a defender of Kelly’s profile, with the Cherries likely to miss out on a hefty transfer fee.

They did try with a club-record contract offer for the 25-year-old, but he has made up his mind about a new challenge away from Bournemouth. Newcastle United have entered the chase for the defender, considering his versatile profile at the back and the cost-effective solution he brings to the table.

His availability on a Bosman move will alert the Magpies and some others chasing the 25-year-old. Liverpool and Tottenham are also interested, and at none of those three clubs will Kelly begin next season as an automatic first-choice starter.

Liverpool and Tottenham keen on Lloyd Kelly

There is a shortage of left-footed centre-backs who can also play left-back, as Kelly’s decision to leave has boosted both Tottenham and Liverpool’s hopes. Irrespective of Jurgen Klopp being at Merseyside, the club will likely benefit from a profile of the Bournemouth star.

Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou has wanted a viable cover for Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie. Signing Lloyd Kelly would be a masterstroke as he could bolster two positions with one Bosman arrival.

Hence, Liverpool and Tottenham can be considered firm favourites, particularly considering they could offer the likes of the 25-year-old and other new arrivals UEFA Champions League football next season.
