Frenkie de Jong is not interested in leaving Barcelona anytime soon, handing a blow to Manchester United’s prospects.

According to a report by Football Transfers, Frenkie de Jong is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils remain keen on signing the 26-year-old Barcelona mainstay in the summer transfer window. But he is not ready to leave the Catalan club anytime soon.

The Rise and Rise of Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world in the last half a dozen years. The Dutch midfielder rose to prominence during his stint with Ajax, joining the club from Willem II in August 2015. But his stock has skyrocketed since joining Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019.

The 26-year-old has turned out over 200 times thus far for Barcelona, chipping in with 16 goals and 21 assists. But de Jong’s future has remained uncertain for a few years due to Barcelona’s never-ending financial issues. That is also the case heading into the summer transfer window.

Recent reports have linked the Netherlands’ international with several Premier League bigwigs. Manchester United also remain interested in signing Frenkie de Jong despite failing to secure his services in previous attempts. And the latest update has revealed that they might pursue multiple players from Barcelona.

Manchester United Still Chasing Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United hold a long-standing interest in de Jong, with Erik ten Hag keen on a reunion with his compatriot. The continued eagerness to land the Dutchman is understandable, considering Scott McTominay faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford. In addition, Manchester United will unlikely complete a permanent move for Sofyan Amrabat in the summer.

So, it behoves Manchester United to invest in a midfielder in the summer transfer window. And de Jong is the most ideal candidate to be a long-term solution in the middle of the park. But the Red Devils do not have any chance of signing the 26-year-old, who does not want to leave Barcelona.

While Barcelona might entertain offers if push comes to shove, de Jong will not consider leaving under any circumstances. So, Manchester United must look elsewhere to bolster their midfield unit, as they have in the last 18 months.
