Barcelona and Tottenham are reportedly the front-runners to sign 17-year-old Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall, a target for Arsenal.

According to a report by Swedish outlet Expressen, Barcelona and Tottenham are the favourites to sign Lucas Bergvall. Several other European bigwigs, including Arsenal, are also keen on signing the 17-year-old midfield sensation. But the Djurgardens IF prodigy has zeroed in on Barcelona and Tottenham as his preferred destinations.

Lucas Bergvall on the Rise

Lucas Bergvall has become one of the most highly sought-after prospects in Europe since joining Djurgardens IF. A graduate of the IF Brommapojkarna youth division, he was already a first-team player for his former club. But the Swedish international has risen in prominence in the last 12 months at Djurgardens.

The 17-year-old has turned out 29 times thus far for Djurgardens IF, chipping in with three goals and one assist. He has also broken into his national team, making his international debut last month. Meanwhile, Bergvall’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs, including Arsenal, Barcelona, and Tottenham.

A Wonderkid in Demand

Arsenal’s interest in Lucas Bergvall is hardly surprising, considering Mikel Arteta is overseeing a youth-driven project. So, with Thomas Partey facing an uncertain future at the Emirates, the Arsenal boss is scouring the market for a replacement. But the Gunners are losing the race to sign the Djurgardens IF wonderkid, who prefers Barcelona and Tottenham as his next destination.

Speaking of Barcelona, recent reports had claimed that they were winning the race to sign the Swede. Barcelona’s interest in Bergvall is understandable, with Joan Laporta heralding a youth-centric project, partly due to the club’s financial struggles. But the Blaugrana will have to be wary about Tottenham’s interest.

Tottenham recently joined the race to sign Lucas Bergvall. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will likely leave the North London club in the summer. So, it behoves them to invest in a young midfielder.

While Tottenham and Barcelona are the favourites to secure Bergvall’s services, Djurgardens IF will recoup a club-record sum from his sale. Part of the transfer fee will also go to IF Brommapojkarna for grooming him in his earlier formative years. It will be interesting to see where the 17-year-old lands in the summer.
