Barcelona will reportedly scout 21-year-old Tottenham midfield mainstay Pape Matar Sarr at the Africa Cup of Nations.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Pape Matar Sarr is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are in the market for a midfielder ahead of the summer transfer window. And they have set their sights on the 21-year-old Tottenham mainstay, who will have scouts monitoring him at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Pape Matar Sarr Resurgence

Pape Matar Sarr has had to bide his time since joining Tottenham from FC Metz in August 2021. He could not establish a foothold in the first-team squad at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in his first two seasons with the North London outfit. But a loan spell at his former club helped him regain prominence.

The arrival of Ange Postecoglou has turned things around for the 21-year-old, who has become a mainstay in the middle of the park for Tottenham. The youngster has featured 19 times thus far this season for Tottenham, chipping in with two goals and two assists.

The Senegalese international’s progress at Tottenham this season has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs. The report by Mundo Deprotivo has revealed that Pape Matar Sarr is a target for Barcelona, who will monitor several youngsters at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Barcelona Interested

Mundo Deportivo has linked Barcelona with many African prospects, including Yankuba Minteh. As for the interest in Sarr, the 21-year-old Tottenham midfielder can be the long-sought midfield solution for the Blaugrana. While he is primarily a box-to-box midfielder, the youngster can also operate in a more defensive role.

So, the youngster has emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, who will track his progress at the Africa Cup of Nations. Other holding midfielders, including Thomas Partey, are also on Barcelona’s radar. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur might not entertain offers for the Senegalese international, who recently signed a new long-term contract with the club.

So, despite monitoring his performances at the Africa Cup of Nations, a summer move will unlikely materialise. But it will be interesting to see how Tottenham will respond to a potential offer from Barcelona for the 21-year-old.
