Newcastle United are reportedly preparing to sell star playmaker Bruno Guimaraes in the summer transfer window, amidst interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are likely to “cash in on” Barcelona and Real Madrid midfield target Bruno Guimaraes and his £100 million release clause at the end of the season.

Newcastle United Under Financial Fair Play Scanner

Newcastle United have not bought a single player through the door this month. Yet, they remain one of the most talked-about clubs in English football. CEO Darren Eales raised a fair few eyebrows by claiming that the Magpies could be forced to offload at least one big-name player to toe the line within Financial Fair Play’s strict restrictions following huge spending in the last few transfer windows.

That has led to Newcastle receiving interest in a lot of their key players over the past few days, many of whom fans would not want to see leave St. James’ Park. The Magpies, like many Premier League clubs, are fearful of facing charges recently levelled at Everton, who faced a ten-point deduction in November, and Nottingham Forest.

This has motivated them to plan sales for their key stars to keep in line with the rules, with Miguel Almiron, Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, and Callum Wilson among the names linked with moves away.

While Isak and Guimaraes are considered untouchables this month, it might be a different story in the summer, with speculation over the Brazilian international’s future in particular not “going away”. Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, and Real Madrid are all interested in his services.

Guimaraes was one of the first signings when the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund took over at Newcastle, and he has quickly become a fan favourite at the club. The midfielder has been a key player under Eddie Howe since arriving from Lyon for a £40 million.

As such, the 26-year-old has already signed an extension to stay at Newcastle until June 2028. But he has now been given a £100 million get-out clause if he is considering a departure in the near future. While that is still a big amount to pay in one lump-sum fee, it is a very achievable price tag and is starting to turn the heads of clubs around Europe, given his world-class potential.

Barcelona, Real Madrid Want Bruno Guimaraes

Barcelona, for one, are determined to sign a top-level pivot in the summer, given that they were unable to do so upon Sergio Busquets’s departure at the end of last season. A swap deal could be utilised by the Catalans. But should Newcastle United decide to deal only in cash, that could leave Barcelona out of the race.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, are understood to be long-term admirers of the player and view him as an ideal successor to the ageing Toni Kroos and Luca Modric in the No. 6 position. It will be interesting to see where the Brazilian lands in the summer.
