Manchester United are unlikely to acquire the services of the former Real Madrid skipper Karim Benzema.
According to Dean Jones via GiveMeSport, Manchester United have been linked with Karim Benzema as reports have emerged that the former French international wants to return to Europe. The Red Devils are looking to bolster their attack in the ongoing transfer window but they might not have the ability to land the 36-year-old.
Benzema parted ways with Real Madrid last summer after a successful stint that lasted over a decade. He won numerous titles during his time at the Spanish club and even managed to win the coveted Ballon d’Or. The former French international decided to join the football revolution in the Middle East and completed a move to Al-Ittihad.
While his performances in the Saudi Pro League have been spot on, the 36-year-old is reportedly looking to return to Europe. Reports of him having a rift with the Saudi club’s manager and seeking a move away have resulted in a lot of interest. And, Manchester United are one of the clubs that Benzema has been linked to.
But, according to Jones, the possibility of them signing the 36-year-old are unlikely. The Red Devils do need a new striker as they want to bring in someone who can support Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish striker hasn’t been able to live up to the lofty expectations since making the move to the Manchester-based club. As a result, Erik ten Hag wants to sign a forward in the ongoing window that can support the 20-year-old.
Jones said: “It’s a nice narrative to be opening up in a window that’s been pretty dead so far. To have a player like Karim Benzema, potentially trying to push for a move definitely is a reason for excitement, especially if you’re a fan.
“Let’s be honest, I mean, if you’re a Man United fan who thinks that Benzema might land at Old Trafford then I’m afraid you’re mistaken. It’s virtually impossible that United are going to sign a striker of such calibre and value in this window.”
While they would love to have Benzema in their ranks, the Red Devils can’t really afford to sign the 36-year-old. United don’t really have the best of financial situations despite their takeover and can’t afford to pay the lofty wages of the former Real Madrid striker. Moreover, Al-Ittihad will try their best to keep him at the club given his importance in their team.
The Red Devils do need attacking support but investing in a 36-year-old who is in the twilight of his career is not ideal for them at this stage. As a result, they will most likely look for an alternative to reinforce their attack before the end of the transfer window.
