Chelsea could reportedly enter the race to sign Kyle Walker-Peters from Southampton during the January transfer window.

That is according to transfer insider Alex Crook (via Give Me Sport), who has admitted that it would not surprise him to see somebody move to sign Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters this month amid fresh interest from Chelsea.

What’s the Deal Surrounding Kyle Walker-Peters?

The Englishman was one of several players that drew attention at St Mary’s during the summer transfer window, and given the Saints’ willingness to cash in on players during the previous window, it came as a surprise to many that he was not snapped up by a Premier League side.

The 26-year-old’s consistency and brilliant form for Southampton have somewhat gone under the radar so far this season. But he also had some very bright moments, popping up with two goals and two assists from right-back in 27 league appearances.

Playing in a variety of positions during the campaign, he has proved to be a versatile asset for Russell Martin’s side and played a key role in the south-coast side’s long, unbeaten run, which stretches back to September, which has allowed them to close the gap on the top two, with Ipswich Town just three points ahead of them at this stage.

Premier League Calling?

The defender’s reluctance to sign a new deal means that offers could well arrive for his services in the next few weeks, with talkSPORT’s Alex Crook mooting the possibility of Chelsea entering the race for his signature as the 26-year-old would provide some much-needed versatility at Stamford Bridge.

There is a question mark over the fitness of Chelsea skipper Reece James, who underwent surgery on a hamstring issue back in December, and it is not yet clear when he will return for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

It probably wouldn’t be the worst idea for free-spenders Chelsea to seriously consider signing Walker-Peters, a player Pochettino already knows extremely well from his time at Tottenham Hotspur.

His blend of athleticism, positive dribbling, and close control creates a player who moves forward with the ball confidently and impacts the game constantly despite playing at right-back. He is also adept at performing multiple roles, which could be a real boost for the Blues.
