Barcelona will not pursue Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, a target for Manchester United, over a possible move this year.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Amadou Onana is no longer the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Blaugrana had considered signing the Everton midfielder, a target for Manchester United, this year. But they have now ruled out a move for the Belgian international.

Amadou Onana at Everton: The Story So Far

Amadou Onana has been one of the brightest spots for Everton since arriving from LOSC Lille in August 2022. While the Toffees have flirted with relegation in the last 18 months, the 22-year-old has gone from strength to strength. In addition, he has risen in stature on the international stage. Furthermore, his market value has soared to €50 million.

The Belgian international has made nine appearances thus far for the Red Devils, becoming a regular in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, he has turned out over 50 times for Everton, chipping in with three goals and three assists. Onana’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs.

Onana in Demand

Several Premier League bigwigs, including Manchester United, have set their sights on Amadou Onana. In addition, the former LOSC Lille midfielder is a target for Barcelona. And recent reports have claimed that the reigning La Liga champions lead the race to sign him.

Barcelona signed two midfielders in the summer transfer window, with Ilkay Gundogan and Oriol Romeu arriving at the club. But both players are short-term solutions, considering they are on the wrong side of 30. In addition, Romeu’s second stint with Barcelona might last only one season, thus necessitating the need for a holding midfielder.

Onana is thus a viable target for Barcelona. But the Catalan giants have ruled out a move for the Belgian international. That should come as a boost for Manchester United, who recently opened talks to sign him. The youngster is also a target for Arsenal.

So, a move within the Premier League might be on the cards, with Barcelona no longer interested in signing Amadou Onana. It will be interesting to see where he plies his trade in the 2024/25 season.
