Tottenham are on the verge of signing former Chelsea striker Timo Werner on a six-month loan from RB Leipzig with an option to buy.
Florian Plettenberg broke the news about Tottenham’s sudden and surprising move to sign Timo Werner on a season-long loan deal. RB Leipzig are open to letting the 27-year-old Champions League winner leave, while other sources have indicated there’s a buy option worth €15-20 million set for the summer.
Tottenham to sign Timo Werner
The news about Timo Werner being on the verge of joining Tottenham is one of the first big surprises of this January window. Spurs have been keen on a new attacker for some time but have set their priorities on signing a new defender as soon as possible.
Now, Florian Plettenberg has broken the surprise news of Tottenham being close to signing former Chelsea star Timo Werner on loan until the summer. The 27-year-old Champions League winner will leave RB Leipzig’s training camp as soon as he gets the green light about an agreement.
While Plettenberg did not confirm a buy option, other sources like David Ornstein did, as The Athletic journalist insists Tottenham does have a clause worth €15-20 million in the summer. Werner has been looking to leave Leipzig for a few weeks now amid Manchester United links.
Aston Villa also wanted him, but the 27-year-old will now join Ange Postecoglou’s side as they attempt to challenge for the title. Werner had a dismal spell in English football with Chelsea, where he did end up winning the Champions League.
What are Tottenham’s January plans?
Apart from the surprise news about Werner, Tottenham still have plans to sign a defender. They had accelerated a move for Radu Dragusin, but Napoli’s late entry have complicated the move, with the Romanian now open to joining the Serie A champions.
Before Werner, they had wanted an attacker, with Postecoglou’s former charge, Jota, not being one of their targets. Spurs will now hope to find an agreement for Dragusin, although they might waste little time if the Romanian joins Napoli instead.
Beyond these, Spurs might also look for a new midfielder if things like finances permit them. There are a few stars like Pierre-Emerick Hojbjerg likely to leave, and if they can get decent money for the Danish international, then Tottenham might look to conduct more business.
