Tottenham Hotspur are unwilling to reunite Jota with Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur are not considering a January move for Al Ittihad star Jota in a bid to reunite him with Ange Postecoglou in North London.

The attacker was one of Postecoglou’s stars at Celtic before moving to the Saudi Pro League last summer. However, Jota has failed to settle in the Middle East and has been touted with an early exit.

The 2024 January transfer window offers him the opportunity to return to Europe. While Tottenham have been long linked with the 24-year-old, a January move appears unlikely. According to Rudy Galetti via X, the left-winger is expected to stay put at Al Ittihad until the end of the current campaign.

A left-winger, Jota can also do a job on the other flank. Bringing him in would ease the pressure on Son Heung-min and allow Postecoglou to deploy his skipper further upfield. The South Korean has been the club’s chief goalscorer following Harry Kane’s exit but the lack of able deputies leaves a major weakness in the Spurs squad.

This will be put to the test this month when Son departs to represent his nation in the Asia Cup. Bringing in Jota would have given the North Londoners options as they mount a surprise title charge.

The 24-year-old is a player Postecoglou is familiar with and it would have been easy for the Australian gaffer to incorporate the player into his Spurs setup. Alas, it is not to be. Whether Tottenham will now look elsewhere or wait until the summer to make a move remains to be seen.

While one can understand managers wanting to reunite with their former players, it is far from a surefire approach to success. After all Erik ten Hag has struggled to coax out any semblance of quality from either Antony, Donny van de Beek or Andre Onana despite managing them while at Ajax Amsterdam.
