Intermediaries have reportedly offered Manchester United the chance to sign Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in the January transfer window.
According to a report by Football Insider, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting could become a new Manchester United player this month. Intermediaries have offered the 34-year-old to the Premier League heavyweights. Preliminary talks have begun, but nothing is advanced yet.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting: The Story of a Hustler
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has scripted a unique legacy for himself in his twilight years after suffering relegation from the Premier League with Stoke City. Interestingly, the Cameroonian striker has only moved clubs on free transfers, doing so eight times. He somehow earned himself a move to Paris Saint-Germain over half a decade ago and has not looked back since then.
The 34-year-old won two Ligue 1 titles with PSG before joining Bayern Munich in October 2020, adding three Bundesliga trophies to his list of honours. While he has rarely been a first-choice starter for the two clubs, the veteran striker has still carved a place for himself. But Choupo-Moting’s stock has fallen this season after the arrival of Harry Kane.
While the experienced striker has turned out 19 times, he has managed only 520 minutes of game time. Meanwhile, Choupo-Moting’s Bayern Munich contract will expire in the summer of this year, meaning he has entered the last six months of his deal. So, the January transfer window presents the final opportunity for Bayern to cash in on him. And a move to Manchester United might be on the cards.
Manchester United Calling?
The report claims that intermediaries have offered Choupo-Moting to Manchester United. Preliminary talks have begun, although nothing is advanced yet. But the latest suggestion contradicts recent updates, which pointed to Manchester United ruling out a move for the 34-year-old.
The Red Devils have previously considered securing Choupo-Moting’s services. So, it is unclear if the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 winner will return to the Premier League. But he can be a short-term solution for Manchester United as Rasmus Hojlund’s deputy, with the club looking to cash in on Anthony Martial.
While Choupo-Moting can be a solid short-term option for Erik ten Hag, Manchester United will be falling into familiar traps by signing him. So, it will be interesting to see if a move for the 34-year-old sees the light of day this month.
