Manchester United have reportedly made contact with RB Leipzig over a deal to sign Germany striker Timo Werner in the ongoing January transfer window.

According to The Athletic, Manchester United have contacted RB Leipzig about the potential cost of signing Werner in the winter transfer market as Erik ten Hag looks to solve his goal-scoring problems.

Werner first moved to the Premier League in July 2020 by signing for Chelsea from RB Leipzig for a fee in the region of £47.5 million. He was expected to score plenty of goals in England after making lightwork of defences’ during his time in the Bundesliga.

The 27-year-old did help Chelsea win the Champions League in his debut season at the club, but his form in front of goal left a lot to be desired. While he managed 23 goals in 89 games for the Blues, he gained a reputation for missing a host of clear-cut chances in a Chelsea shirt.

Chelsea ultimately grew fed up with his profligacy and decided to cut their losses by sending him back to Leipzig in August of last year for just £25 million.

The German will have hoped to pick up where he left off in Leipzig, but he currently finds himself in a difficult situation. Werner did well to score 16 goals in 40 games last season, though he has fallen down the pecking order this term and is no longer a regular starter, with Lois Openda and Benjamin Sesko preferred over him by head coach Marco Rose.

Werner is said to be frustrated with the way things are going in Saxony and could seek a move away this January. It is claimed that he is on the list of striker targets for Erik ten Hag, who is eager to bolster his attack, but United are walking a financial fair play tightrope.

United have desperately struggled for goals this term and have scored just 22 times in 20 league appearances. Werner could be available on a loan deal, which would work for United as they can afford his wages but not necessarily a higher transfer cost. However, given Werner’s form while playing for Chelsea, he doesn’t seem like the man to solve their goal-scoring woes.
