Manchester United intensifying efforts to sign Giorgio Scalvini

Manchester United are reportedly ramping up their efforts to sign Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, a target for Real Madrid.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Giorgio Scalvini is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are stepping up their efforts to sign the Atalanta defender, whose price tag is €50 million. Meanwhile, the Italian international is also a target for La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid.

The Rise of Giorgio Scalvini

Giorgio Scalvini is one of the best young defenders in the world. A graduate of Atalanta’s youth division, he rose through the ranks at the Bergamo-based club before making his first-team debut as a 17-year-old in October 2021. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old has also made his international debut and rising in stature for the Azzurri.

The Italian international has turned out seven times for the Azzurri after making his debut last year. Meanwhile, Scalvini has made 75 appearances thus far for Atalanta, chipping in with four goals and three assists. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many high-profile clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Real Madrid, Manchester United Vying for Scalvini

Real Madrid’s interest in Scalvini stems from the advancing years or Antonio Rudiger, Nacho, and David Alaba, with all three defenders on the wrong side of 30. In addition, Nacho is in the final year of his contract with Real Madrid, while Alaba is recovering from a long-term knee injury.

So, it behoves Real Madrid to invest in a young centre-back, with Giorgio Scalvini emerging as a viable target. But Los Blancos might be behind Manchester United in the race to sign the 20-year-old. And the Red Devils are ready to step up their interest in the youngster.

Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire face an uncertain future at Old Trafford, with the former, in particular, closer to the exit door. Scalvini is thus an option worth considering for Manchester United, where he can be Varane’s long-term replacement. But the Italian international will not come cheap, with Atalanta demanding €50 million to sell him.

The young central defender’s potential means €50 million might be a worthy investment in him. But it will be interesting to see if Manchester United will meet Atalanta’s valuation of Giorgio Scalvini.
