Bayern Munich will be happy to fork out €20 million to sign Manchester United defender Raphael Varane, a target for Real Madrid.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Raphael Varane is the subject of interest from Bayern Munich. The Manchester United defender is also a target for La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid. But the Bundesliga champions are prepared to cough up €20 million to land the French centre-back.

Raphael Varane at Manchester United: The Story So Far

Raphael Varane has been among the best defenders in the world for nearly a decade. A graduate of the RC Lens youth division, the 30-year-old rose to prominence during his stint with Real Madrid. He won everything with Los Blancos before seeking a new adventure in August 2021, with Manchester United securing his services in a deal worth €40 million.

But injuries have blighted Varane’s stint at Old Trafford, while he has lost prominence in the 2023/24 season. The Frenchman has turned out 15 times thus far, managing less than 1,000 minutes of game time. But the Manchester United defender’s stock remains high, with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid among his prospective suitors.

Where Will Varane Land Next Year?

Bayern Munich can do with a top-class centre-back amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Matthijs de Ligt. In addition, Kim Min-jae will embark on the 2024 AFC Asian Cup next month. So, it behoves Bayern Munich to invest in a centre-back heading into the January transfer window.

Raphael Varane has thus emerged as a viable target for Bayern Munich. And the reigning Bundesliga champions are ready to pay €20 million to sign the Manchester United defender. But the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner is also a target for his former club, Real Madrid.

The Merengues have lost two central defenders this season to long-term knee injuries, with likely to be fit before the campaign ends. Varane has thus emerged as a top target for Real Madrid, although recent reports have contradicted such claims.

With Bayern Munich willing to fork out €20 million to sign Varane, a winter move might be on the cards. But parting ways with the 30-year-old Frenchman midway through the season might not be a sensible decision by Manchester United.
