Sevilla are plotting an approach for Marc Cucurella in January as the La Liga giants seek necessary defensive reinforcements.

According to Fichajes, Sevilla could seek talks with Chelsea to determine if they can acquire Marc Cucurella in January. The versatile defender has had a mixed-bag season at Stamford Bridge, with his future not completely secure at the club.

Marc Cucurella’s situation at Chelsea

Marc Cucurella has not had the best season, although Chelsea are also not in the best form. The Spaniard suffered a nasty ankle injury and underwent surgery that would see him only return around mid-March.

Despite his medium to long-term fitness issue, Sevilla are still keen and believe he can make a quick recovery and help them in their quests this season. The La Liga giants are struggling with defensive injuries and eager to sign players despite their dificult financial position.

Cucurella had featured on Sevilla’s radar before after a disastrous start to his season. Chelsea had initially banished him after his failed move to Manchester United around deadline day. However, he performed well for the club and became an important figure.

Another report stated Mauricio Pochettino had given him a Chelsea lifeline, meaning the Argentine boss might keep counting on Cucurella, who joined Chelsea for £60 million, to play an important role. Persistent injury problems for their full-backs had seen versatile defender play on both flanks to good effect.

However, as things stand, with this new ankle injury, Chelsea might sit back and ponder if they can find a way to part ways. For now, nothing seems concrete, but things could change rapidly at Stamford Bridge for the £60 million versatile defender, as has been the case over the last 18 months.

Can Sevilla afford Cucurella?

Sevilla recently appointed a third manager this season and have thoroughly struggled for relevance in all competitions. They do not have European football of any kind, and there are doubts about whether they can achieve anything meaningful in La Liga.

They do have multiple injury issues, especially in their defensive ranks. So, they are keen on strengthening their backline within their capacity. They did make a recent enquiry for Malang Sarr on loan, showing their financial problems in bringing in players permanently.

Hence, there are doubts whether they can afford Cucurella, as Chelsea will look to recoup most of their £60 million investment. They will try to push for a deal, although there are big questions about any prospective deal for the Spaniard.
