Manchester City are on the brink of securing the services of Matija Popovic

According to Football Insider, Premier League champions Manchester City are closing in on landing teenage prodigy Matija Popovic as we near the 2024 January transfer window.

The 17-year-old came through the ranks at FK Vojvodina before moving to Partizan Belgrade in 2021. The attacking midfielder is in top form and has scored 21 goals and assisted five more in 25 games for the Partizan youth side.

While he will still have much to do before stepping up to the big leagues, Popovic has displayed all the potential needed to earmark him as a prodigy. By moving fast, Pep Guardiola and Cocan could land themselves one of world football’s best young talents before other sides gain a whiff of his abilities.

The Cityzens are ready to offer the teenager a lucrative new deal to get the deal over the line. He is set to be offered a five-year deal that will include a clause that should reward him handsomely for meeting targets. In short, Popovic can earn a killing should he perform as per expectations.

The midfielder is set to leave Partizan as a free agent at the end of December. City will have to pay the Serbian side a development fee due to Popovic’s age, something that could prove to be a bargain in the long term.

However, the deal is not yet signed and AC Milan remain committed to landing the player. The Rossonerri remain keen to land the player despite City’s interest and already have a five-year deal agreed with his entourage.

A lot can happen in the transfer market and no deal is over the line until the contract is signed and the ink is dry. With January fast approaching, it remains to be seen if Milan or City will come out at the top of this transfer tussle.
