Chelsea will not sell Conor Gallagher to Tottenham at any cost, although the midfielder’s future remains under a cloud of uncertainty.
According to Football Insider, the chances of Conor Gallagher signing for Tottenham are slim to none, as Chelsea will refuse to do business with their city rivals. The two clubs have a strained relationship dating over two decades, which could see a move collapse for the midfielder, whose future remains uncertain at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham may or may not have made a cheeky bid late in the summer window to sign Conor Gallagher. Spurs sensed the vulnerability and the possibility of them selling their homegrown star. Yet, the move never materialised.
As Gallagher’s future remains under a cloud of uncertainty, Tottenham could have returned to the table and made another offer. The north Londoners are undoubtedly interested in the 23-year-old if he becomes available.
Chelsea are reportedly planning on selling Gallagher in January despite his strong performances. Mauricio Pochettino commented it was a ‘club decision’ when asked about the 23-year-old’s future. He did fail to confirm the club’s stance about a possible sale.
Manchester United have also shown an interest, while other clubs like Tottenham and West Ham are also considered suitors. The prospect of signing one of the top midfield performers this season would elevate the interest of any big club. Chelsea are potentially looking to make a handsome profit off his sale.
West Ham are reportedly out of the running, but Tottenham are still in the mix. Chelsea are not eager to do business with Daniel Levy with the relationship between the two clubs strained for over two decades.
Goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini’s move to Spurs back in 2009 was the last time they did business, which might stay the case in the foreseeable future. Chelsea will refuse to sell Gallagher to Tottenham as they do not want to strengthen a city rival.
Spurs are in the market for a new midfielder in January as there are some problems in their squad. Ange Postecoglou will lose starting choices Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr to the AFCON in January. There are also uncertainties about Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future at the club.
Hence, Spurs might have thought about signing Gallagher, but now, in the current circumstances. They are unlikely to pass the first hurdle in negotiations with Chelsea.
