Aston Villa will reportedly look to sign 27-year-old German international Timo Werner from RB Leipzig in January.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Timo Werner is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. Unai Emery wants the Midlands outfit to sign a striker in the January transfer window. So, the 27-year-old RB Leipzig attacker has emerged as one of two targets for a winter move.

Timo Werner: The Fall of a Once-Highly-Rated Striker

Timo Werner has endured a fall from grace since ending his first stint with RB Leipzig. The German international was one of the most highly-rated strikers in the world when he left the Bundesliga club to join Chelsea in July 2020. But the move was a disaster, as he blew hot and cold at Stamford Bridge.

While Werner won the UEFA Champions League with the West London club, he struggled to make his mark. An underwhelming two-year stint ended last year, with RB Leipzig re-signing him. But the 27-year-old has not hit the heights of his first spell with the Bundesliga outfit, blowing hot and cold at the Red Bull Arena.

The former Champions League winner has been in and out of the starting lineup at RB Leipzig this season. He has raked in only 386 minutes of game time across 14 outings, managing just two goals and one assist. But Werner’s stock remains high in the Premier League, with many clubs, including Aston Villa interested.

Aston Villa Want Timo Werner

Aston Villa will delve into the market for an attacker in the January transfer window. They have shown interest in players like Alex Baena, Ez Abde, and Samuel Iling-Junior. But Unai Emery also wants a new striker to bolster the push for the Premier League and UEFA Europa Conference League titles in the second half of the 2023/24 season.

Timo Werner has thus emerged as one of two strikers on Aston Villa’s radar. The 27-year-old has previous experience of the Premier League, even though he was not prolific for Chelsea. But a January move might not be on the cards, with reports claiming the German international wants to remain at RB Leipzig beyond the winter window.

Kelechi Iheanacho is the other striker on Aston Villa’s radar. So, it will be interesting to see if the Villans turn to the Leicester City attacker if the move for Timo Werner does not see the light of day.
