Maxence Lacroix on Liverpool radar

Liverpool might look to sign 23-year-old French defender Maxence Lacroix from Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg in January.

According to a report by 90min, Maxence Lacroix is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds are combing the market for centre-backs heading into the January transfer window after losing Joel Matip to a long-term injury. The 23-year-old VfL Wolfsburg defender has emerged as one of the options on their radar.

Maxence Lacroix is a native of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges in France and spent his formative years at four clubs in his homeland. He graduated from the FC Sochaux youth division around half a decade ago. But the player has risen to prominence since joining VfL Wolfsburg in August 2020.

The 23-year-old has been one of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga in the last three years. He has turned out over 100 times for Wolfsburg, chipping in with four goals and one assist. Meanwhile, Lacroix’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs. One of his prospective suitors might be Liverpool.

The Reds are in the market for a centre-back heading into the January transfer window. Liverpool initially wanted to sign a central defender in the summer transfer window. But Joel Matip recently picked up a long-term knee injury, and it has changed the club’s plans for the winter.

Several centre-backs, including Jonathan Tah, have thus emerged on Liverpool’s radar over a possible move in the 2024 January transfer window. Meanwhile, the Reds have also shown interest in other central defenders, like Goncalo Inacio. But Maxence Lacroix is also a viable target for the Merseyside club.

The 23-year-old is an able reader of the game and can be Ibrahima Konate’s long-term central defensive partner at Anfield. With Virgil van Dijk approaching the final phase of his illustrious career, signing a young centre-back like Maxence Lacroix will be sensible.

For now, the VfL Wolfsburg defender has only emerged as one of several centre-backs on Liverpool’s radar. It will be interesting to see who the Reds identify as their top target heading into the January transfer window.
