Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have reportedly set their sights on Barcelona loanee Clement Lenglet, currently at Aston Villa.

According to a report by BILD, as relayed by SPORT, Clement Lenglet is the subject of interest from Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga champions are in the market for a centre-back heading into the January transfer window. And they have set their sights on the Frenchman, currently on loan at Aston Villa from Barcelona.

Clement Lenglet has been on Barcelona’s books since July 2018, arriving at Camp Nou after a solid debut season with Sevilla. But the 28-year-old has endured a rollercoaster ride at the Catalan club. While he started his spell with Barcelona strongly, his stock has plummeted in the last few years.

The French international became a bit-part player for Barcelona in the 2021/22 season before joining Tottenham Hotspur on loan for the 2022/23 campaign. While Lenglet was decent at the North London club, they did not complete a permanent transfer this past summer. Instead, Aston Villa snapped him up from Barcelona.

The Frenchman joined Aston Villa on loan for the 2023/24 season. But the move has not worked out well for Lenglet, who has managed only five UEFA Europa Conference League appearances for the Midlands outfit. So, with his fortunes not improving at Aston Villa, something has to give. And Bayern Munich might provide the Barcelona loanee an escape route in January.

The Bundesliga champions are ready to dip their toes in the market for a centre-back in the January transfer window. Matthijs de Ligt is on the sidelines due to an injury. Meanwhile, Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae have blown hot and cold at the Allianz Arena. So, recent reports have linked Bayern Munich with several centre-backs, including Barcelona mainstay Ronald Araujo.

But a move for Araujo will unlikely see the light of day, with neither party ready to part ways. However, Clement Lenglet has now emerged as a target for Bayern Munich. Bayern’s interest in the French defender is surprising, considering his inconsistencies in the last few seasons.

So, the 28-year-old will not solve any issues at the Allianz Arena. Nonetheless, Bayern Munich will likely approach Barcelona over a possible move for Lenglet heading into the January transfer window. It will be interesting to see if a deal sees the light of day and if Aston Villa will part ways with him.
