Tottenham could end their pursuit of Trevoh Chalobah once and for all amid the 24-year-old Chelsea utility man’s latest setback.
According to The Mirror, Tottenham are ready to abandon their pursuit of Trevoh Chalobah amid the 24-year-old’s persistant injury troubles. The Chelsea utility man suffered another setback that could keep him out until early January, which has prompted Spurs to cool their interest.
Trevoh Chalobah caused quite a stir late in the summer market when a host of clubs showed an interest in taking the Chelsea outcast. Earlier in the season, Mauricio Pochettino suggested the 24-year-old remained part of his plans, but Chelsea’s openness about selling him insisted otherwise.
Chalobah, who rejected a £25 million move to Nottingham Forest on deadline day, had ambitions to join a bigger club than Steve Cooper’s side. Incidentally, Bayern Munich came close to securing the 24-year-old Chelsea utility man on loan, but a deal collapsed owing to the early closure of the German window.
Tottenham had also expressed an interest, and beyond the summer window, they retained the admiration for the 24-year-old Chelsea star. After a new update on Chalobah’s ongoing battle with fitness issues, things have changed in the past few weeks.
Bayern Munich have reportedly cooled their interest after knowing about the latest setback suffered by the defender in his quest to get fit. Chalobah will likely miss the remainder of 2023 and potentially return in early January if there are no further problems.
Tottenham have also followed suit and abandoned their pursuit of the 24-year-old Chelsea utility man. Spurs had thought about bringing in a new defender in January and had Chalobah high on their shortlist. However, they are unconvinced about his fitness levels and may see fit to avoid the chase.
In hindsight, they will feel relieved not to have tied up a deal for Chalobah late in the summer window, as he would have missed the action until January. Spurs will likely move on and focus on signing other defenders in the next window.
As for Chalobah, he faces an uncertain future, especially after missing the first part of the season in a competitive and young team like Chelsea. The Blues will also see his fitness issues as a setback in their efforts to squeeze at least £25 million from suitors from his sale.
The Chelsea owners had hoped to get a sizeable return from his sale to boost their finances and align with FFP rules. Now, they might face a big task in offloading him, although Chalobah could revive his value by performing well in the second part of the season.
