Real Madrid will reportedly consider signing 30-year-old Argentine striker Mauro Icardi from Galatasaray in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Mauro Icardi is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are contemplating a winter move to bolster their offensive unit after Vinicius Junior picked up a hamstring injury in this month’s international break. The 30-year-old Galatasaray striker has thus emerged as a target.

Mauro Icardi: A tale of a turnaround

Mauro Icardi has finally found a stable foothold in his career after a few years of uncertainty. The Argentine striker’s ill-fated spell with Paris Saint-Germain was a rollercoaster ride, with issues on and off the field hampering him. But a loan move to Galatasaray in the 2022/23 season turned his fortunes around.

It was hardly surprising that the Turkish giants completed a permanent transfer this past summer, paying just €10 million to seal the deal. Icardi has been exceptional thus far this term, amassing 15 goals and three assists in 20 appearances. The 30-year-old’s progress at RAMS Park has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of Real Madrid.

Should Real Madrid invest in Mauro Icardi?

Real Madrid chose not to sign a like-for-like replacement for Karim Benzema in the summer transfer window after the Frenchman joined Al-Ittihad. While Los Blancos landed Joselu on loan from Espanyol, the veteran Spanish striker took Mariano Diaz’s spot in the squad.

The decision has not paid off thus far, with Jude Bellingham being the only prolific player for Real Madrid this season. In addition, Vinicius Junior has picked up a hamstring injury that will keep him on the sidelines for the foreseeable future. So, Joselu and Rodrygo Goes are the only available attackers for Carlo Ancelotti.

Real Madrid should ideally delve into the market for a prolific striker. But recent reports have pointed to a possible summer move, with Gabriel Jesus among their summer targets. However, Mundo Deportivo has digressed, suggesting the Merengues want to secure Icardi’s services this winter.

The decision makes sense, considering the lack of goals from players other than Bellingham and the injury crisis in Ancelotti’s squad. But it will be interesting to see if there is any weight to the rumour and if Icardi becomes a top target for Real Madrid heading into the January transfer window.
