Intermediaries reportedly offered Real Madrid the chance to sign Nico Williams, but the Merengues have rejected the Barcelona target.
According to Jose Felix Diaz, as relayed by Madrid Xtra, Real Madrid had the chance to sign Nico Williams. Intermediaries offered the Spanish international, a target for Barcelona, to Los Blancos. But the Spanish giants are not interested in him and have rejected the opportunity to sign the Athletic Club winger.
Nico Williams has established himself as one of the best young wingers in the world in the last few years. A graduate of the Athletic Club youth division, the 21-year-old has been with the Basque outfit for a decade. But his stock has soared since breaking into their first-team squad.
The Pamplona native has become a pivotal figure for Athletic Club in the past year and has also broken into the Spanish national team. Williams has also started the 2023/24 season well, managing one goal and seven assists in ten appearances thus far. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed.
Recent reports have linked Williams with several high-profile clubs, including Premier League bigwigs like Manchester City. In addition, the Spanish international is also attracting interest from La Liga heavyweights like Barcelona. Meanwhile, intermediaries had offered Real Madrid the chance to sign him.
Real Madrid can use a winger like Nico Williams as he can boost the team’s creativity. With Rodrygo Goes blowing hot and cold, the Merengues need a new wide attacker. In addition, with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos approaching the end of their glittering careers, a shot of creativity from the attack will come as a boost.
As for Barcelona, the Catalan giants need to invest in a young winger amid uncertainties surrounding the futures of Ferran Torres and Raphinha. Nico Williams has thus emerged as a viable target. Meanwhile, the player has a release clause worth €50 million in his Athletic Club contract, although he is in the final year of his contract.
The report by Jose Felix Diaz has revealed that Real Madrid will not take up the offer to sign Nico Williams. Recent reports have claimed that Los Blancos would prefer to sign Takefusa Kubo instead of Williams. So, Barcelona might have a clear run at the Spanish international, although Athletic Club will look to tie him to a new contract.
