Chelsea will reportedly compete with Manchester United for Antoine Griezmann, whose release clause of €25 million makes him an attractive target.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Antoine Griezmann is gaining popularity in the market. Chelsea and Manchester United are keen on signing the 32-year-old next year. Meanwhile, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner has a release clause worth €25 million in his contract with Atletico Madrid.
Antoine Griezmann was once the best player in the world not named Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. But the Frenchman’s performance levels plummeted after moving to Barcelona in July 2019. He failed to consistently make his mark for the Blaugrana, who sent him back to Atletico Madrid on loan in August 2021.
The move has done wonders for Griezmann’s career, with the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner rediscovering his best levels. The 32-year-old has established himself as one of the best attackers in La Liga in the last two years. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid completed a permanent transfer this past summer, paying €20 million to re-sign him.
The French international has been exceptional this season, amassing 12 goals and one assist in 16 appearances thus far this term. Griezmann’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of high-profile clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United. Meanwhile, his release clause of €25 million adds to his allure.
Manchester United attempted to secure Griezmann’s services many years ago before he joined Barcelona. But a move failed to materialise, as he remained at Atletico Madrid. However, Manchester United’s continued interest in the World Cup winner is surprising despite his excellent form for Atletico Madrid. While he can play across the frontline, he might not fit alongside Bruno Fernandes.
As for Chelsea, the Blues signed a player with similar qualities to the 32-year-old. While Christopher Nkunku is yet to make his debut for the West London club, he should be a long-term solution in the final third. So, Chelsea’s interest in the French international is perplexing.
But Chelsea and Manchester United have the financial muscle to pay €25 million to secure Griezmann’s services. However, reports this week have suggested that the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner is not interested in joining Manchester United. It will be interesting to see if he moves to the Premier League anytime soon.
