Manchester City keen on tying Erling Haaland to new deal

Manchester City want to pen down a new deal with their 23-year-old striker Erling Haaland amidst interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

According to a report by 90min, Manchester City are keen on having Erling Haaland in their ranks for years to come. The 23-year-old striker is one of the best forwards in world football, and there is a lot of interest in his services. But the Premier League champions are looking to tie him down to a new deal.

Haaland came into the limelight quite early in his career. He made a name for himself while playing for Red Bull Salzburg and then continued his progress after joining Borussia Dortmund. In the summer of 2022, Manchester City managed to land him at the club.

In his very first season at the club, Haaland smashed numerous records in all competitions. He scored a total of 52 goals and helped them win the Premier League, Champions League and the FA Cup. The 23-year-old has continued in a similar fashion in the 2023/24 season, he already has 17 goals to his name.

Haaland’s exceptional performances have attracted a lot of attention and according to the report, there are a number of release clauses in his deal similar to what he had at Dortmund and Salzburg. But, those clauses will become active in the summer of 2025. Haaland penned down a five-year deal when he joined City back in the day.

Haaland’s current deal runs until the summer of 2027, and there is still a lot of time before it expires. But, Manchester City still want to pen down a new deal with him. In the recent past, they contacted his agents over a new deal where his release clauses would be removed but his agent Rafaela Pimenta wants his client to be in control of his future.

As a result, they are not too keen on a new contract. However, Manchester City are still pushing for talks with his agents over a new contract. This time around they are looking to soften their stance and discuss a deal that will increase the release clause’s value rather than a total removal.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are both keen on having him in their ranks. And, the general feeling is that Haaland will end up at one of the Spanish clubs. Los Blancos are favourites for his services, but they are unlikely to make any moves next summer as their primary target is Kylian Mbappe.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are also in the race, the Catalan giants are trying to balance their financial situation by 2025 and then land the 23-year-old at the club. Robert Lewandowski is in the twilight of his career, and there cannot be a better replacement than Haaland.
