La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on 24-year-old Dutch midfielder Mats Wieffer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Don Diario, Mats Wieffer is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are scouring the market for a midfielder ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window. The 24-year-old Feyenoord midfielder has thus emerged as a target for Los Blancos.

Mats Wieffer has come leaps and bounds since joining Feyenoord from Excelsior in July 2022. The Dutchman had spent his career until then going under the radar in his homeland. But his stock has risen in the last 18 months, especially after he guided Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title last term.

The 24-year-old took little time to establish a foothold in Feyenoord’s first-team squad. Wieffer has continued from where he left off last season, dominating the midfield in 16 outings thus far while chipping in with two goals and one assist. Meanwhile, the player has broken into his national team this year.

The midfield powerhouse made his debut for the Netherlands in March 2023 and has already made five further appearances on the international stage. Meanwhile, Wieffer’s progress at Feyenoord has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Real Madrid. Recent reports have also linked him with Barcelona.

Real Madrid will likely delve into the market for a midfielder in the 2024 summer transfer window. Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are approaching the end of their glittering careers. So, it behoves Real Madrid to search for a versatile midfielder who can be the ideal foil to regulars like Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Eduardo Camavinga.

Several young midfielders, including Gabriel Moscardo, have thus emerged on Real Madrid’s radar. But Mats Wieffer is also a viable target for Los Blancos. While the 24-year-old is primarily a holding midfielder, he can also play as a box-to-box midfielder and a centre-back. His presence will also enable Camavinga to play a more advanced role.

Meanwhile, the Dutchman should not cost a bomb despite his status as a pivotal figure for Feyenoord. But it will be interesting to see how much the Eredivisie champions demand if they receive an approach from Real Madrid.
