Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Liverpool are behind Manchester City in the race to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club.
According to a report by AS, as relayed by Sport Witness, Nico Williams is the subject of interest from Manchester City. And the Premier League champions lead the race to sign the Spaniard, whose release clause is worth €50 million. The Athletic Club winger is also a target for Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Liverpool.
Nico Williams has established himself as one of the best young wingers in the world in the last few years. A graduate of the Athletic Club youth division, he has become a pivotal figure for the Basque giants. Meanwhile, the Spanish international has also broken into his national team, making his debut last year.
Williams has started the 2023/24 season well, managing one goal and five assists in ten outings thus far. But the 21-year-old has left Athletic Club in a spot of bother, as he has entered the final year of his contract. Such a situation has captured the attention of many high-profile clubs, considering his release clause is worth €50 million. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Manchester City are his prospective suitors.
Barcelona and Real Madrid regularly lock horns in the market for young prospects. They have waged battles in the last few windows over Endrick, Pablo Torre, and a few others. Nico Williams has now emerged as a mutual target for Barcelona and Real Madrid.
But, says the report, Barcelona will not be in a position to afford to pay €50 million to secure Williams’s services. In addition, recent reports have claimed that the Spanish winger has been in advanced talks over a new contract with Athletic Club. But if the discussions do not progress well, Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Manchester City have the financial muscle to trigger his release clause.
Liverpool might soon need a replacement for Mohamed Salah amid relentless links with Saudi Pro League clubs. As for Manchester City, the Premier League champions constantly scour the market for young prospects. The report has claimed that the Citizens are the front-runners to sign the €50 million-rated winger.
